    I'm 64 and I ride a 2012 Harley Nightrod with a 260 rear tire through the mountains /jungle in Malaysia every weekend. I have probably watched 50 videos trying to figure out trail braking. I tried to practice it this morning, but couldn't get the hang of it. The problem was that in many videos the 'instructor' appears to stay on the throttle while keeping some pressure on the brake. Apparently a lot of front brakes have a 'click' or detente when the brake engages...not on a Nightrod! So it felt very awkward to keep two fingers on the brake lever while still holding some throttle. It wasn't until I watched this video, specifically the close up of the person manipulating the brake in a curve AND your explanation before I figured it out. You can see in the closeup that the rider gets on the brake before the curve, slows down, then gradually gets off the brake at the exit...then all four fingers grip the throttle - they weren't covering the brake with two fingers all the time! Maybe I'm just an old crappy rider, but thanks for this video, it really cleared things up for me!

    This is grea5. 8ve been looking for more information on the science side of motorcycling. Courses that contain the info are mostly reserved for experienced riders. Learners in the UK prettybmuch have to figure it out solo, and pass their tests before they can access advanced courses. The kind that talk about how the machines actually work. Yet, if we could understand the machine, we would then have the awareness to build on our skills... knowledge is power! insane way of things iwhere I lisve, in my opinion. DAS corses dont teach us this element. They only focus on shiwing what the test examiner wants see.

    Mrs Gears bought a brand new 125cc Chinese brand (won't say which one) bike a few years ago, and I rode it into the dealers for its run in service. I told the 'mechanic' that when stopped, the bike wouldn't go out of 1st gear into neutral at all. I had to rock the bike back and forward to get it out of gear... Seeing the L Plate on the bike, his reply was "Motorbike gearboxes are different from cars. You need to rock them back and forwards..." 😮 To which I gladly informed him that I'd been riding bikes for over a decade and NEVER had to rock one back and forward." Needless to say, I did the work on the bike myself and told them to shove the warranty! 😂😂😂

    the big question is "how do UNICYCLES steer?" lol. despite 15+years experience, my technique improved by leaps and bounds when i got an RC motorbike. first one. whys it steer backwards? after the first run, that answered itself... its countersteering. next one...why doesnt it steer? that took a while to figure out. you DONT steer an RC bike! you jab it, let it fall over, and ride the throttle/brakes... has a huge control horn to exaggerate the movement... and soft springs to let the wheel "float" where it wants to... maybe a damper to stop the shakes... no gyro to keep them up, thats cheating... just standard steering geometry and the same physics as a full size bike. and still the most realistic of the RC vehicles... the physics scale. but yeah, i still cant corner hard. nope. never come to trust tyres and prefer riding to sliding.

    The tire pressure recommendation from the manufacture might not be optimal. Looking at recommendation of older (2019-2020) motards like KTM 690 or Husky 701 the recommendation says around 2 bars. If you buy a new motard it says 2,5 bars which is way to high for a light bike like these motards. The reason for this is Euro5 demands so it has nothing to do with best grip/riding performance.

    I had a woman pull out from a side street then panic and stop right in my lane . Missed her by an inch. I pulled front and rear brakes as hard as I could with out locking up . Not ten minutes later a deer jumped out in the road and also froze ( maybe the dear and the lady were somehow related. lol ) . A true dear in the headlights moment. Missed him by an inch too . When I got home I thanked my lucky stars . I guess the lesson learned is not panic and always expect the unexpected to happen as you ride !

    "Pleasantly warm" is still cold, operating temperature for hypersport tires/race slicks is almost too hot to touch with your hand--like the temperature you'd drink coffee at. If you ride slicks and they are not uncomfortably hot when you get off the bike and touch them, you're probably better off running DOTs.

    I only dropped my bike once. Well not "my" bike, but the instructor's... It's when you have to turn while driving away. Always a struggle to have just enough throttle, clutch and balance to keep just enough control. With that in mind, I'm definitely ordering an engine guard for my own Hunter. Best tip I ever got during a refresher course was to put my leg on the ground on the side that you want to go to, so that you're already leaning in the right direction. This works well for beginners, but now I'm stopping with my right foot keeping the brake light engaged for safety sake. Anyway, as someone who never dropped his own bike yet, I can only say that I enjoy corners, but I approach them with prejudice. I have yet to go so fast that I can't respond to something that I couldn't see yet, and I'm confident that this will not happen soon on a 350cc bike. These videos are a life changer, no, a life saver. I will always apex late and practice my trail braking until it becomes second nature.

    Hi from Ontario Canada. What a thrill to hear these legends talk and share their many years of wisdom. I have been street riding for 45 years this year, I am 62. I started riding in 1980 , and been a fan of you both for about that long also. I was a motorcycle riding instructor for 30 years - we never sent anyone home unless they did not have proper gear or crashed , but then they could return. I still like to help new riders. I did one track day school here but want to do another before I get too old to enjoy it. You never stop learning at any age. I suscribed 5 minutes.into this.. Once again a huge thank you to you all. -

    The reason they teach against cornering like that is if you do take too much speed and you don’t take properly, you are going to run wide and if you go that way to begin with, you will end up in the other lane and risk head on collision that’s why your green line that you talked bad about is the proper line

    There's a saying in climbing that I'm going to translate for us. There are bold bikers and old bikers. Never both. If nothing else, it should be a rule to only apex when you can see the exit, and go in wide and slow until that point. Biking should be fun. Do you think funerals are fun? Or riding in the back of an ambulance? Treating scrapes on your gas tank and, oh yeah, yourself? Didn't think so 😂

You provide so many helpful insights that are easy to implement when you're still getting familiar with your own bike. You should seriously consider making a ten chapter Udemy course about how to ride your first bike, covering maintenance, safety and handling etc. I'm sure many people would pay money to know they're starting the relationship with their bike on a good note.

    A few months into riding I started trail braking. I went on a ride with someone with 7 years experience. He scalded me and told me that what I was doing would get me killed. Tried so hard to learn to corner how he believed to be correct, a couple months later I ran wide because of this and had a head on with a Nissan Navara. I lost my bike but miraculously came away with a mildly injured knee. It wasn't until after the crash that I realised trail braking is the safest way to enter a blind corner you've never taken before. Learn to trail brake accurately and safely. It might just save your life

    Hi, there, new subscriber/biker here :) You know what would be nice in this type of video for a beginner like me? At the end of it put a clip of just 3-4 minutes from the same point of view but with a colourful frame around the screen (maybe red for brake, green for throttle), in that way it would be easier for me to figure out when to do what with my peripheral vision without having to change my focus :) Just an idea, your tips are really great, thanks a lot 😄

    • @CanyonChasers
      @CanyonChasers 4 дні тому

      I understand what you are saying - but that doesn't really work because brake/acceleration for me on my bike, my tires, my road, my skill is going to be wildly different than yours. Here's the key: Go to the brakes when you are nervous - no matter when/where that is. Even in the middle of the corner. Slow until two things happen. You are happy with your speed and you are happy with your direction. Do not actively start to accelerate until you can see your exit _AND_ you can take away lean angle. Where or why I get nervous is going to be different. When I can see the exit and have direction is going to be different, right? Our biggest objective is to give you the tools to make appropriate decisions for your situation. Diadactic, step-by-step processes work fine in parking lots and make for easy video content - but the reality is that if we want to be the best riders we can be, we must learn the fundamentals, and then be adaptable to constantly changing situations.

    You can't fully control your thoughts and emotions. We can only observe when our fight or flight instinct kicks in, be aware that it has a purpose, and once it served its purpose try to consider what we want out of our day and how to get there. Fear is the mind killer, but it keeps us alive.

    Good video. Will compression braking work just as well as trail braking to load the front tire?

    • @CanyonChasers
      @CanyonChasers 4 дні тому

      If by compression braking you mean "dragging the brake while maintaining throttle through a corner" - as has been popularized recently. The answer is absolutely no. That concept is exceedingly risky and based entirely on one guys misunderstanding that they published into a book. You can get away with it when we are going slow and we have excellent grip - but it quicly falls apart when the speeds come up or the grip comes down. It effectively puts the bike into a state of unbalance where it doesn't want to slow down and it doesn't want to turn. There are very few hard and fast rules in motorcycling - but one of them is we never, never, ever overlap the front brake and the throttle. Despite what other youtube channels or programs advocate for. There are situations where we can overlap rear brake and thottle, but those situations are pretty rare and not nearly as applicable on modern motorcycles with traction control, etc.

    Unfortunately this attitude carries across all disciplines, where people are learning a new physical skill. Seen exactly the same thing from flying instructors who keep trying to bash more experienced pilots back into day one habits, that are intended only to simplify and keep students away from trouble that they don't understand yet. I've learnt to smile n do whatever they insist on, on the day and get on with my life.

    I like this more than any other explanation out there! The front of a motorcycle steers directly like any other vehicle. Turn the bars to the right, the wheel goes to the right, and the bike body falls left... Countersteering is just a term for the initiation of a lean into the turn. However, you never addressed the title of this video and the quote that you presented. Where is the mystery? I have seen other videos out there say the same thing without elaborating. I don't think researchers are trying to "solve" a bicycle problem, rather trying to make better computer models. The TU Delft "experiment" was not a revelation into something mysterious, it was a demonstration. The equations show gyro and trail are not necessary for self-steering as there are other things such as steer system flop (gravity) and tire twisting moment.

    • @CanyonChasers
      @CanyonChasers 4 дні тому

      I spoke with several researchers in making this video - all who declined to be interviewed on camera. Two of them basically said a variation of "we still don't fully understand how bikes work." Granted, their level of detail is greater than most.

    Many of our friends choose tires that have long treadlife. My husband and I prefer to buy tires with a shorter but still decent tread life - and provide optimal grip. We believe that good tires are a lot cheaper than a trip to the ER.
